Consumer Guide's Impressions of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu
Modern shapes, a classy cabin, and some caffeine under the hood, this is a midsize American car we could pine for rather than settle for.
This is the latest domestic to challenge the dominating Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Chevy's strategy is to offer a bigger car for less money, and hope any quality gap -- real or perceived -- isn't a deal breaker. Making its debut along with other Malibus is the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, which teams a four-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor.
This Malibu is significantly larger than the 2005-2007 version, and dusts the Ford Fusion, too. It comes only with front-wheel drive -- Fusion's available with all-wheel drive -- but engine choices are in step with class leaders. The four-cylinder has 164 horsepower, the V6 has 252. The hybrid will be good for about 170 horsepower.
Uncomplicated gauges and controls, nicely grained plastics, and sturdy-feeling panels put the interior where it should be. Two-tone trim in rich, muted colors, and soft ambient lighting are upscale upgrades.
A Notable Feature of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu
Malibu one-ups most rivals by offering a six-speed automatic transmission with the four-cylinder engine on the top-line Malibu LTZ model. This combination achieves highway mileage of 31 mpg, Chevy says. Chevy estimates highway mileage of 26 mpg for the V-6. Both are good numbers for a car of this size.

Straightforward controls and available two-tone trim highlight the cabin.
